How do regional chapters operate? Each SCBWI chapter is guided by a Regional Advisor (RA), a volunteer appointed by the National office. Some regions have Co-RAs. Every chapter is unique. How does our SCBWI-Michigan chapter operate? Our Michigan chapter has Co-RAs who work with our volunteer staff which includes an Advisory Committee (Adcom). Adcom members help the RAs make decisions that affect our region as well as plan and implement events and services. Our RAs and Adcom volunteers are asked to serve three years. Each year, as some Adcom members' terms expire, new volunteers step forward to serve on our committee. This way, there are always those with experience to share, and new volunteers with fresh ideas and enthusiasm. This system helps insure that the workload doesn't remain on the same few shoulders and it also provides members regular opportunity to gain connections and knowledge from peers and professionals. We are a share-the-work, share-the-knowledge chapter. In addition to deciding which events to hold and where to hold them, Adcom members chair or co-chair these events. They also discuss what local services might most benefit our membership, and how to implement and maintain those services. Our website, listserv, mentorship program, and speakers list were once just ideas. We welcome all volunteers and regularly seek members outside of Adcom to co-chair events, work on committees, help with our listserv or newsletter, event brochures, or do a host of other tasks which keep our region running smoothly. All regional events and services such as Networks Day, Critique Meets, Workshops, Conferences, Retreats, Illustrator Schmoozes, Newsletter, MichKids listserv, Mentorship program, and our Website are funded by your event registration and Newsletter subscription dollars. Chapters do not receive a direct portion of your SCBWI membership dues. SCBWI Membership offers many benefits, regardless of where you live. Services within a region vary, and are a direct reflection of local volunteers' talent, effort, and dedication. Your Michigan RAs and Adcom members are working to provide these services.
