When you join SCBWI,
you automatically become a member of your regional chapter. There are no separate or additional regional dues. You can not
join only your local chapter. In other words, to join SCBWI-MI, you must join the international group.
Membership benefits include reduced
registration fees to events throughout the world, eligibility for awards and financial grants, a subscription to SCBWI's
bimonthly magazine the Bulletin, and access to many helpful, members-only publications and online services. A full list of
benefits provided to all members, regardless of their home chapter, is posted at the international website. You can even join online.
What Do I Get When I Join?
From the membership office, you will receive a thick packet that includes the SCBWI Publications Guide to Writing
and Illustrating for Children, helpful information compiled in one handy book. Writers and illustrators in the early
stages of their career will find this guide particularly helpful. In that packet you will also find a member roster, your
membership card (entitling you to receive reduced fees to SCBWI events throughout the world), and a current issue of the SCBWI
Bulletin.
You will also be given access to SCBWI's online resources, including Members Only Discussion
Boards. These forums are a great way to keep up-to-date on current marketing information, upcoming events, and the goings-on
of your fellow members. Posting forums include Critique Groups; Publishing Tips, Techniques & Questions; Portfolios, Contracts,
Art Submissions & Other Biz; Public Speaking Resources; Classifieds; and many more.
When our chapter receives notification that you have joined, a Welcome letter will
arrive in your email or roadside mailbox. Information to help you participate in our chapter is now at your fingertips.
For three decades, SCBWI has offered much to professional
and aspiring authors and illustrators. Active participation reaps greater benefits, and networking possibilities are terrific!
